The facts on facial fillers – 2

FDA-approved plumpers

Zyderm and Zyplast

What they are Liquid forms of bovine collagen, a protein found in the skin of cows, used to fill shallow lines and deeper wrinkles. To guard against disease such as mad cow, the substances come from well documented, grain-fe U.S. cattle and are highly purified.

Time they last Three to six months.

Track record With nearly 25 years of use and few reported complications, both are viewed as safe by most dermatologist.

Biggest worry You could be allergic to bovine collagen (a skin test required four weeks prior to treatment, which leads to redness of lumpiness that lasts until it breaks down. While very rare, a reaction could develop even after passing the test.

Cost $250 to $450 per syringe (one treats two crow’s-feet)

Bottom line There is potential for allergies, but the track record seems to show they are among the most reliable of these fillers.
